Background of the study
Digital communication has led to noticeable syntactic changes in Nigerian online discourse, with platforms such as Facebook and Twitter fostering distinct sentence structures. Facebook comments, characterized by longer, more elaborated text, often display creative punctuation, nonstandard word order, and blended language forms. In contrast, Twitter threads—formed by a series of connected tweets—require brevity and rapid expression, prompting users to adopt truncated sentences and innovative syntactic constructions (Okeke, 2023). These syntactic adaptations reflect not only the inherent constraints of each platform but also the evolving linguistic practices influenced by cultural and technological factors. The comparative analysis of Facebook comments and Twitter threads provides a unique perspective on how digital environments shape syntax, offering insights into the interplay between form, function, and communicative efficiency in Nigerian online discourse (Ibrahim, 2024).

Statement of the problem
Although significant syntactic variations are evident in Nigerian digital communication, comparative studies analyzing these differences across platforms are scarce. Most research has focused on either Facebook or Twitter in isolation, thus neglecting the impact of platform-specific constraints on syntax. This study seeks to bridge this gap by comparing syntactic innovations in Facebook comments and Twitter threads, thereby offering a comprehensive view of digital language evolution in Nigeria (Chukwu, 2024).

Objectives of the study

  1. To analyze syntactic patterns in Facebook comments and Twitter threads.
  2. To compare platform-specific syntactic innovations.
  3. To assess the broader implications for Nigerian digital communication.

Research questions

  1. What syntactic variations are prevalent in Facebook and Twitter discourse?
  2. How do platform-specific features influence sentence structure?
  3. What impact do these innovations have on digital language evolution?

Significance of the study
This study is significant as it provides a comparative analysis of syntactic innovation across popular digital platforms, enhancing our understanding of how technology reshapes language in Nigeria (Ibrahim, 2024).

Scope and limitations of the study
The study is confined to textual analysis of Facebook comments and Twitter threads in Nigerian digital discourse and does not extend to other media or offline communication.

Definitions of terms

  • Syntax: The arrangement of words and phrases to create well-formed sentences.
  • Facebook Comment: A user-generated response on Facebook.
  • Twitter Thread: A series of interconnected tweets forming an extended discussion.
